The Role of the Pelvis in Low Back Issues
By Dr. Conn, Biophysics Chiropractic
When patients come in with low back discomfort, most expect the problem to be isolated to that specific area. What I often explain is that the body does not work in isolated parts. The pelvis plays a central role in how the spine functions, and when it is not moving or positioned well, the lower back is often forced to compensate. Understanding this relationship is one of the most important steps in addressing why discomfort develops and why it sometimes continues to return.
The Pelvis as the Foundation
The pelvis serves as the base of the spine and the connection point between the upper and lower body. Every movement you make, whether walking, sitting, or lifting, relies on how well this foundation is functioning.
When the pelvis is balanced, the spine is able to stack and move more efficiently. When it is not, the body begins to shift and compensate to maintain stability.
Over time, these compensations become the body’s new normal, which is why many people feel discomfort without realizing how long the pattern has actually been developing.
How Imbalance Affects the Lower Back
When the pelvis tilts, rotates, or becomes restricted, the lower back adapts to maintain balance and function. This adaptation may not feel problematic at first, but it changes how forces are distributed through the spine.
• Increased load on certain lumbar joints
• Muscles working harder to stabilize the area
• Reduced efficiency in movement patterns
• Greater fatigue with daily activity
Because the body is designed to keep you moving, it will continue to compensate even when those patterns are not ideal.
This is why many people experience recurring discomfort, the underlying movement pattern has not changed, only the symptoms have temporarily improved.
Movement and Coordination
The pelvis is responsible for coordinating movement between the upper and lower body. It plays a role in nearly every functional movement you perform throughout the day.
If the pelvis is not moving well, other areas such as the lower back, hips, and even the knees may begin to take on more stress.
This creates a chain reaction where one imbalance leads to another, often making the original issue more complex over time if it is not addressed at the source.
Looking Beyond the Pain
Low back discomfort is rarely just about one location. It is usually the result of multiple areas working together inefficiently.
By evaluating how the pelvis and spine interact, we gain a clearer understanding of the root cause rather than focusing only on symptoms.
This approach allows us to create a plan that improves how the body functions as a whole, not just how it feels in the moment.
If your low back discomfort has been recurring, or if you feel like you have addressed the symptoms but not the cause, this is the right time to take a deeper look. Schedule a consultation so we can evaluate how your pelvis and spine are working together and build a plan that supports long term improvement, not just temporary relief.
