Is Chiropractic Care in San Diego CA Safe?

Chiropractic San Diego CA Patient Care

Chiropractic is a strange concept for people that are used to society's Western medicine because it deals with treating a body using the power of the body and preventing illness rather than waiting for the body to be ill, diseased or broken and using medication and surgery to try to fix it. Ironically, what may make chiropractic strange coincidentally is also what makes it the safest form of health care available. Come see for yourself at our chiropractic clinic in San Diego CA.

The Doctor's Education & Training in San Diego CA

Doctors of Chiropractic have to endure more schooling and training that your general physician. These graduate students also spend more than half of their graduate program being trained to perform chiropractic adjustments and an extensive amount of time working in student clinics refining their techniques. Most students also join on- and off-campus organizations to obtain specialized training and to further their knowledge and technique. In most states, Doctors of Chiropractic are required to participate in what's called continuing education. This means that they have to attend educational seminars or independent work. There are a set number of hours required within a certain period of time. Although not every state requires continuing education, most chiropractors have such a passion for what they do they choose to continuously educate themselves.

The First Visit is Important

The thoroughness of the first visit to a chiropractor is part of what makes chiropractic so safe. There are several steps that are taken to ensure your health including, but not limited to:

  • Intake paper work: medical history, current health, medication, family and social history
  • Subjective report: the portion of the exam in which you talk about what is wrong, when it started, how it started, etc.
  • Palpation: the doctor will feel the segments in the spine to feel what is misaligned and in what direction. This also is the patient's time to provide feedback about what they are feeling.
  • Orthopedic and neurological testing: these are tests that provide information about where the underlying cause is located.
  • X-Rays: these provide visualization of the spine so the doctor can see what is misaligned and how. This is how doctors know what to adjust and how.
  • Instrumentation: some doctors use various instruments as another step to ensure they work on only the misalignments that exist at the time of the visit.

Research

Research is showing us how safe chiropractic truly is as well as how effective it is. There is little risk to receiving chiropractic adjustment. Adjustments to the neck seem to be what people the most hesitant because they feel like it is not a safe maneuver. Chiropractic adjustments causing strokes is a fear that the medical world has instilled in many people but the fact is that the likelihood in experiencing a stroke due to a chiropractic adjustment is 1 in 5.85 million adjustments. If you consider that the average American is on 11 medications and that many medications include stroke as a possible side effect, the odds are increased if you are taking medication.

There was a study performed that involved analyzing over 800 stroke records in a hospital to see if there was any association to chiropractic. They found no association to chiropractic within these patients. Another study performed followed the outcome of over 19,500 patients following a chiropractic adjustment. Not a single patient suffered any serious side effects.

In Conclusion

Chiropractic doesn't put your body's health at risk because they do not use medications or perform surgeries. They assist your body so it can heal itself.
